New Comic “Yeah It’s Chill” Is as Funny as It Is Relatable

Have you ever felt like you're juggling a million things at once or experiencing one of those I-can't-be-the-only-one moments?

"Yeah It's Chill" by Christine Rai, which just arrived on GoComics, lightheartedly takes readers through the trials and tribulations of modern life. The twice-weekly webcomic strip is full of universal thoughts and experiences that will make you think: "Hm, I'm glad it's not just me."

We spoke with Rai as her cozy feature launches on GoComics!

What is your cartooning origin story?

I’ve always loved cartoons and animation. I was a creative kid and was always doing crafts and drawing in the margins. My parents made sure I had supplies to express my creativity and I’ve kept journals and sketchbooks since I was very young, so I’ve always been cartooning to an extent. I didn’t start consistently making 'toons to show the world until 2017, but before then, I consumed them voraciously.

How did “Yeah It’s Chill” come to fruition?

In 2016 I was feeling dissatisfied in my work life. I graduated college a few years before and felt listless. I worked at a startup, then as a pharmacy technician, then as a project manager. At this last job, I started a comic as a creative outlet where the main character was a version of myself. I missed being creative consistently, and this was a great place for me to put that energy. It also helped me look for the humor and lighthearted moments during a confusing time. I posted on social media and it took off from there.

Tell me more about the inspiration for the name of your comic.

My (short) time working at a startup in marketing influenced how I settled on a final name. I wanted a name that was two or three syllables, was easy to spell and say, and unique enough that I’d be able to secure the social media handles and website. Beyond that, the comic started out as a look into the mind of an anxious woman in her 20s who is figuring how the world works and where her place is in it. She’s making a life for herself while trying to present an assured and confident facade, but underneath is really faking it till she hopefully makes it. I felt like she’d say, “Yeah, it’s chill” when she’s very much not feeling chill.

What’s your routine for coming up with a strip, gag, or idea?

My comics are inspired by life, for the most part. Whenever something happens that makes me step back and reflect, I add it to the neverending ideas list in my phone’s Notes app. Around once a week, I sketch out a few of the ideas on my iPad and complete the comics that speak to me.

Who are the readers you hope most connect with “Yeah It’s Chill”?

Can I say everyone? I initially wrote the comics to express my emotions and work through them for myself. I also try to make my younger sister laugh.

How would you describe your cartooning style?

I’m influenced by 90s/early 2000s shows on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, and I love the feel of Studio Ghibli films. I came into this particular visual style because when I started, I didn’t have the digital drawing tools I have today. I drew everything with my finger on a drawing app on my tiny phone screen. The shapes needed to be simple and easy to recreate, and the backgrounds were sparse because it hurt my finger to draw for too long. The style of the comics today evolved from the circumstances around that.

Do you have a favorite topic that you like to cover in “Yeah It’s Chill"?

I love covering a bit of everything including pop culture, fashion, dating, friendship, family, and mental health. I also enjoy making comics that are more data driven around social justice issues.

Do you have any favorite comic strips that you look to for inspiration?

Absolutely! "Hyperbole and a Half" by Allie Brosh was one of the first web comics I read about mental health. I sent one of her comics to a bunch of people with the note, “This is how I feel! She’s inside my head!”. I also love classic "Peanuts" and "Calvin and Hobbes" and contemporary short web comics such as "Violet Clair", "Good Bad Comics", "Yes, I’m Hot in This", "Haley Drew This", and "But Like Maybe?".

Be sure to read and follow "Yeah It's Chill" on GoComics, where it will update twice a week!
